In January, 2012, Julie Anne Lindsey's debut novella, Bloom, launched the Honey Creek Line for Turquoise Morning Press. In honour of the "Bloom Blog Tour," I had the privilege of interviewing my blooming friend, author, and one-woman tour de force, Julie Anne Lindsey.

Julie, without giving anything away, would you give us a brief synopsis of BLOOM?

Bloom is the story of a small town woman with a broken heart. Cynthia left town after high school and tried not to look back, but pain has a way of haunting us. When she has to make a trip home, things get complicated. The head-in-a-hole method of avoidance is my personal favorite, but let’s face it, eventually the one you’re avoiding will tap you on the shoulder.

Tell us about your publishing journey with BLOOM?

With Bloom, I happened into an amazing situation. I needed to get readers, but my potential readers had nothing from me to read. Hmm. So, I started asking around to see who was writing what and for where. A few of my romance writing friends write for Turquoise Morning Press, so I stopped to check them out and saw their call for submissions. When they accepted Bloom as a novella for their new Honey Creek line, I had no idea what I was in for. In the past year I’ve contracted a series of sweets with them for 2012 and written a full length sweet for 2013. I’ve had the opportunity to work with editors and be in two anthologies in 2011. I’ve met great writers with lots of experience and kindness and advice. I’ve been lucky beyond reason by finding this press and this line to write for.

Julie, what was your inspiration for BLOOM?

Bloom was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon. I adore that movie and I couldn’t help but write a similar tale of my own. In Bloom, my heroine, Cynthia returns home after many years away, not for a divorce, but to check on her grandmother. The problem is that she’s been avoiding home because of a heart break she incurred there. Coming home creates a lot of inner turmoil for my feisty heroine and the town’s new golden boy doesn’t help matters any. LOL She runs into problem after problem, while dealing with her grief and guilt and feelings for a man who seems to hate her for no particular reason at all. I can thank Reese Witherspoon for inciting this character.

Julie, please tell us about "Death By Chocolate - Book 1 of The Killer Confection Series."

Death by Chocolate is a novel of silliness and instability. The Killer Confections stories follow two nutty girlfriends working to get away with murder. They were spawned from the sweetest lady I know, who bakes for our church and looks like June Cleaver. She got me thinking about how much damage she could do with her sweet treats and never be suspected. Everyone loves here, but what if she wasn’t what she seems? This series is devoid of romance and filled with crazy. Oh, but what we won’t do to help our girlfriends!

Writers often describe themselves as "character driven," or "plot driven" writers - which are you?

I am plot driven all the way. I think up a great “what if” scenario and then I run with it! When I get a hold of an interesting story line, I build my characters around that. I try to create the best (or truthfully the worst) possible characters to be put in those situations and then I have something great to work on. Torturing my pretties makes for a great story!

Julie, I know you are a busy wife and mother, how do you find time to write? What's your writing schedule, and where do you write?

Our little princess (aka child number three) came along three years ago and my office effectively became her castle. So, these days I write on my couch, laptop on lap, and kids everywhere. It’s a crazy situation, but what can I say, I love writing almost as much as I love my little ones, so I write with them all around, and often stand up to find myself covered in My Little Ponies or Army Men action figures. It’s the insane little experiences that fuel my stories and inspire my characters. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It will be past too soon.

I should also add that I don’t sleep much - LOL! I write before they get up (I get up at 6:00 a.m.) and after they go to bed (I write from 11:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.-ish, after Hubsy goes to sleep). I plan to sleep when I’m dead, or when the government starts rationing coffee!

You have such a strong, high-profile web presence, with planks such Twitter, Facebook, Musings From The Slush Pile. Can you please speak to this? How would you advise aspiring writers to build their platform?

Just like writing, building a platform takes tenacity. You work at it day by day and after a week you’ve been seen 7 times, a month = 30 times, etc. You just keep showing up and people start to recognize your name, your personality and even begin to feel like they know you. Make an account everywhere and drop in once a day to say something. You don’t have to stay all day to make a place for yourself.

Social media is free and those not taking advantage of it are missing out. The online writing community is so witty and charming, and encouraging and knowledgeable. Make some writer friends! Also, set up a free blog and keep it active so the search engines don’t mark it inactive and drop it 50 pages down in the search results. Use Twitter! Readers, writers, agents, editors, publishing houses, all use Twitter. Get in there! And don’t forget Goodreads; it’s a great place to keep up with what’s selling, who’s reading it and where you can fit your work into the fold. Just keep moving forward. It all counts!

Julie, what are you currently reading, and what books are on your nightstand?

I just finished the newest Stephanie Plum novel, Explosive Eighteen. It was fabulous, as they all are. I am beginning Hallowed the second in Cynthia Hand’s series that started last year with Unearthly. Normally, I have at least three books going, but my hard drive crashed recently, and I lost everything I have ever written (gasp, bawls, dies), so I’m busy making up all those lost pages and piecing things together from email. I have limited time for reading comparatively *wipes tears*.

Which authors (living or dead) would you consider as your personal writing influences?

There are so many amazing writers out there today that I admire. I love Janet Evanovich for her quick wit and outstanding humor. I love Maggie Steifvater for her beautiful words. I love Becca Fitzpatrick for her vivid storytelling. That doesn’t begin to touch on all the debut authors I read and loved in 2011. To go all 100 years ago on you, I’d also love to talk with Emily Dickenson. I cannot imagine being a writer before the Internet, when it was a solitary affair. Who would you talk to? No one, I’m guessing, because women were barely treated as people let alone given any respect as writers. She had a lonely life pursuing her dream. I think of her when I’m wallowing in rejections or self-pity. I have a whole world (literally) of writers at my fingertips to pick me up when I’m down.

What is your "all time favorite" book, and why?

Well, I have to say my favorite book is Twilight. Ugh, I know, collective groan, but let me explain! Until I saw Twilight on Pay Per View, I hadn’t read a book in ages that wasn’t about parenting or homeschool. Twilight caught my attention and pulled me back into my love of all things literary. I am eternally grateful I saw that movie, or I might never have picked up the book. *shudder* What would I be doing today if not writing? I never would’ve met my awesome author friends like YOU!

Can you name a book you wished you'd written, and why?

Nope. Let me tell you why - LOL! I think that, as writers, we are specially gifted with experience and perspective to tell our stories in ways that only we can. If I had written my favorite book, it wouldn’t have been the same at all. I’m thankful every day for the flooded literary market because it allows me to see unlimited stories through the eyes of the world. My small rural Ohio perspective couldn’t begin to do so many stories justice.

Julie, if you were to write an autobiography about your life thus far, what would the title be?

Oh, my autobiography is already written. It’s the Cinderella story. My life was crazy and not in the fun way for 25 years. Then I met my husband and everything slowed down. He has been my knight in shining armor and my prince from day one. I am blessed and lucky that he saw something in a bar-dancing grad student and asked her out. I had a bare midriff, a belly button piercing, a bad attitude and a 3.97 GPA. I guess it intrigued him - LOL - and, the rest is history. Today my life is my own personal fairytale.

What are your future writing goals; what's next?

Wow! I think everything is yet to come. I have three romance novellas coming this year to Honey Creek and another novel-length sweet coming next year for this line as well. My debut novel, Death by Chocolate releases late in March, and I have lots of fun events scheduled around Ohio and the web for that. I have a YA with my agent and am writing a cozy mystery. The Death by Chocolate sequel will come early next year. There’re just so many wonderful possibilities around every corner. I excited to see what will happen next! "Family Day" in Ontario, Canada

"Family Day" is a provincial holiday in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, Canada on the third Monday in February. In the province of Manitoba, it's a general holiday, known as "Louis Riel Day." Whatever you call it, Family Day is a welcome respite between the Christmas/New Year holiday and Good Friday/Easter, in a month where it seems the winter will never end (although this has been a relatively mild winter!).

The idea of Family Day is to celebrate the importance of your family; to take part in activities that promote family life and togetherness. Some families go skating, tobogganing, skiing, or other outdoor pursuits, while many visit the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Ontario Science Centre, or the awesome Metro Toronto Zoo.

However, in my family, it's usually a day of sleeping late, enjoying a long, leisurely brunch, and then everyone scattering to the four winds to do our own things such as walking the dogs, watching movies, baking, reading (of course!), and catching up on some much needed sleep.

The Voice - Whitney Houston

I'm so saddened by the untimely death of "The Voice - Whitney Houston."

Although I didn't know Ms. Houston personally, we were only three years apart in age, and I remember her explosion onto the music scene as a young adult, and I watched (and listened to) her meteoric rise to the top.

During the 80's, you couldn't listen to the radio for long without hearing one of Whitney Houston's many hits. Some of my favs: "Saving All My Love for You," "I Look to You," "Exhale (Shoop)," "I Have Nothing," and my absolute fav, "Run To You."

Although there were other singers with Ms. Houston's level of talent (Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, k.d. Lang, Kate Bush, Gloria Estefan, Agnetha Faltskog & Anni-Frid Lyngstad (the ABBA ladies), and more recently, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, and Christina Aguilera, but to name a few) I felt there was something about Whitney's voice that contained the most emotion and soul, as well as the most amazing control and range - the "gold standard," if you will. And, I loved that she always looked so stunning and regal. In short, she made it look and sound easy.

Beautiful and mega-talented, to me, Whitney Houston has always been "The Voice." My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked about the fantastic sales of WIND over the holidays. It speaks to the fact that readers are still looking for a haunting YA Paranormal Romance to curl up with (I also wonder if I'm not the only one eternally fascinated with the notion that we all have a guardian angel!).

Thank you for taking a chance on the debut novel of a self-published author, and since everyone has been asking me, yes, SAND, Book Two of the Eternal Symmetry Saga, will be released in 2012.

And, to answer the question I've been asked by so many readers, "Will DANTE and FLYNN meet again?" You'll just have to wait and see, and that's all I'm saying - LOL!

A Stephen King Christmas

Master Story Teller, Stephen King

Over the holidays, I devoured two yummy Stephen King novels (along with a lot of high calorie Christmas food!). There's something folksy, and comforting about Mr. King's writing style that I love, and his books are perfect to curl up with on a cold, snowy evening.

The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition
I found this dark tale about a small group of survivors of a post-pandemic society almost impossible to put down. It has everything a great novel should have - a cast of believable characters; an exciting and detailed plot; a hauntingly rugged setting; sumptuous world-building, and a good versus evil theme. At 1,152 pages, it's Mr. King's longest book, and arguably his best!

Bag of Bones
After watching the miniseries on TV (filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada, by the way), I had to read the novel. What particularly fascinated me about this book was that the narrator (a fictional Stephen King, I suspect) is a writer suffering from a severe case of 'writer's block' and cannot seem to get moving on his next book (sound familiar?). I enjoyed the paranormal aspect of the plot (don't want to give anything away), but what I really loved was the setting, a beautifully rustic lake house, complete with a genial cleaning lady (gotta get one of those!). Bag of Bones is perhaps Mr. King's most sentimental book, and I loved the references to Daphne Du Maurier's, Rebecca, my favorite book!

What a fantastic year it's been! My debut novel, YA Paranormal Romance, WIND, was finally published on Amazon.com, and Kindle, WIND made it to the second round of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest (so exciting!), and as an added bonus, I've made many great new writer/reader/blogger/Twitter/Facebook friends.

I look forward to more fun, and new challenges and goals, as well as the publication of book two in The Eternal Symmetry Saga, SAND, in 2012.

Frankenstein: A Review

Goodreads Review of Frankenstein: the original 1818 text by Mary Shelley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An excellent edition of this ultimately sad tale of Victor Frankenstein and his creation, "the fiend," as he calls him.

The informative introduction and appendices are a real bonus. I particularly enjoyed the introduction written by Mary Shelley herself (Appendix G), explaining how she formed the unbelievably original idea for this book as a young girl.

Beautifully written!

A High Wind In Jamaica by Richard Hughes

With all this hurricane talk on Twitter, I'm reminded of an excellent novel - A High Wind In Jamaica by Richard Hughes, published in 1929.

The Bas-Thornton children, John, Emily, Edward, Rachel, and Laura, enjoy a carefree, privileged life on their family sugar cane plantation in late nineteenth century Jamaica. A massive hurricane desimates their home, and their parents decide to send them back to their original home in England via merchant ship. The ship is seized by pirates, and the children are kidnapped.

The children quickly learn to appease their captors in order to survive, but soon find themselves adapting to their new life too well, and they begin committing primal, uncharacteristiclly dark deeds (al la Lord of the Flies by William Golding).

A High Wind In Jamaica is a classic of twentieth-century literature; a beautifully written story about seduction, duplicity, and unexpected violence. However, the real treat is Hughes' delving into the ingenious minds of children adapting to a crisis.

Note: This is a book about children; not for children.

The Most Beautiful Blog!

"French Sampler" is the most beautiful blog I've ever seen! I came upon it accidentally, while searching for photos of Lily of the Valley (my fav flower). As I began to look around the blog, I was stunned by the gorgeous photos, appealing writing, and overall beauty.

Blogger, "Dash," is an English woman, living in South West France with her half English, half French lover (how cool is that?) and their smooth haired Fox Terrier, Crusoe (the adorable pooch is in some of her photos).

The posts range from stunning photos taken while showing friends around the French countryside, to purchasing leopard print shoes, to Dash's favourite books, food and clothes (my three favourite things!).

Also, there are lovely little side-bar photos, illustrations, and paintings (I love, "Woods In The Mist") - every picture is just to drool over!

Southern Gothic - Tennessee Williams

All this hot weather makes my mind meander to books set in the South with extreme heat, long cool drinks, men in white suits wiping their brows with large linen handkerchiefs, delicate southern laidies swooning. I’m not talking Gone With The Wind; I was thinking more along the lines of Tennessee Williams – Southern Gothic.

Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. He immortalized The South in such works as The Glass Menagerie, A Street Car Named Desire, and my personal favourites, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and, Suddenly Last Summer.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is set on a large cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta in the summer – and it’s hot. The patriarch and tycoon, Big Daddy, so brilliantly portrayed by the late Burl Ives in the 1955 Broadway production, as well as the 1958 big-screen version, is huffing and puffing in the heat and at one point, Maggie, played by the great Elizabeth Taylor, holds her glass up to her brow to cool down. Ceiling fans slowly twirl over white wicker furniture, and shuttered windows are flung wide open, in anticipation of catching the smallest breeze. During the climax, the heavens open and torrential rains descend upon the plantation.

In Suddenly Last Summer, Catherine (again played by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1959 film version) has a breakdown after witnessing her cousin’s death in Spain. We see Sebastian in an immaculate white suit and Panama hat, running from the pack of boys who will soon devour him (quite literally), Catherine with a deep brown tan, in a swim suit under the white hot skies and bleached white sand.

Other Southern Gothic writers I admire are: Charlaine Harris, Kami Garcia, and Margaret Stohl, Truman Capote, Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, and, of course, William Faulkner.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

With all the "Kate Mania" sweeping Canada this weekend, I thought it appropriate to talk about Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Why, you ask? What does Anne of Green Gables have to do with the Royal Tour of Canada? Well, according to all the reports on the news, the Duchess of Cambridge has specifically asked to visit Prince Edward Island, childhood home of Montgomery, and the setting of her charming novel. It has been reported that Anne of Green Gables was a childhood fav of Her Royal Highness.

Without giving too much of the plot away to those who have not yet read AOGG, the story goes as follows:

Writing Can Be Painful

All week, I've been in brutal pain from have a wisdom tooth removed. And I'm talking only one tooth! I can't imagine the pain of having all four removed, as many people do. This extreme pain (I'd rather be in labour - LOL) led me to the thought, "Writing can be painful."

Don't get me wrong, I love writing. I treasure the whole creative process; I feel at home working with words. I adore creating new worlds, characters, and stories. However, there are certain aspects of writing a novel that are painful. Like childbirth, you are giving life to brand new characters, settings, and plots, which is exciting, but it can be a struggle. Getting it just right is a process in itself, and we all want to get it just right.

We all want to see our writing published, and surviving the whole query process - from crafting the perfect query letter, to the nail-biting agony of waiting for replies - can be stressful, and yes, even painful. The "blood, sweat and tears" put into crafting our letter - devising the perfect pitch, cutting words, keeping it humble, formatting professionally - can be frustrating, aggravating, and downright headache-generating!

Having said all that, like childbirth, all the pain is worth it. There is joy in writing a graceful sentence, pride in "delivering" an exciting chapter, and an unbelievable sense of accomplishment when you type, "The End." Then, there is the hope that you will give birth to a brilliant, new career, with the great expectation of sharing your all your hard work, and talent with many readers.

Through all this, try to keep in mind that if you’re suffering over your manuscript, it likely means that you care deeply about your readers, and your reputation. Embrace the pain as a rite of passage, from unformed thought to clear expression, and hopefully, the fruits of your labor will become a published book.

SAND - The Saga Continues!

As I 'm deep into the second book in my YA Paranormal Romance Saga, SAND, I can’t help but ponder the advantages and disadvantages of writing “the second book”.

There is a certain straightforwardness to continuing the saga: For one thing, main characters are established; their physical descriptions, personalities, quirks, speech patterns, humour, values, relationships. Hopefully, readers will already care enough about your characters to be excited to see them resurrected, so to speak, to stick with them through the long haul.

Then there’s the settings; initil settings have been established and described in the first book, but this will likely expand, and transform. New sights, sounds and smells will have to be imagined and described.

The theme is usually carried on – theme is soul; it permeates the entire saga; it’s your very reason for writing (at the risk of sounding dramatic!).

The challenges arise when faced with “topping” the first MS; giving your readers a reason to carry on reading, to say, "I can't wait until the second books comes out!"

New and improved plot, characters’ newborn hopes and dreams, imaginative rising action and climax. Just like real life, things never stay the same.

The real challenge is the conflict. Conflict will have to be original, and exciting enough to make a continuing story worth reading, of course. Without fresh conflict, there is no fresh story; without fresh story, there is no second book.

It’s a huge commitment, a second book, but it’s an exciting challenge, and a chance to bring your beloved characters - your friends, so to speak - back to life!

And so I say, Flynn, Dante, Kevan, Shiobhan, Dylan, Pippa, and yes, even Lix, welcome back!

Fierce Dawn by Amber Scott

I loved the skilled writing, and the characters were full and well-developed. I loved that Sadie was so complex, instead of the usual one dimensional protagonists we so often read about.

I thoroughly enjoyed Fierce Dawn, and highly recommend this original and polished novel!

This morning I started thinking about my own Mother's favorite childhood book, and remembered it was "Little Women." How perfect to write about it today, Mother's Day, because Little Women had one of the best "mother characters" ever!

Little Women was written by Louisa May Alcott, and published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. The setting is Concord, Massachusetts, during the Civil War, and follows the lives of four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March - and their mother, whom they call "Marmee". Marmee is head of the household, as Mr. March is a chaplain in the Union Army, and rarely at home.

Little Women is a coming-of-age story about family love, loss, and struggle. The young woman at its center, Josephine, or "Jo" March, is outspoken, brave, and a tomboy at heart. She is a dreamer and a writer (sound familiar?), and happiest in the attic, reading or writing stories and plays. She loves to write, direct and star in flamboyant dramas. To use a modern-day term, she's a teenage drama queen!

Margaret "Meg" March is sixteen and the oldest sister. She is the beauty of the March family, and she is genteel and well-mannered. Meg runs the household when her mother is absent.

Elizabeth "Beth" March is thirteen years old when the novel opens. Beth is a sensitive, quiet, and kind girl, but her health is precarious, and the other girls protect and nurse her when she becomes seriously ill.

Amy, the youngest sister, is twelve when the story begins. Amy is the artist in the family. She is somewhat spoiled, and more than a little vain (she sleeps with a close peg clamped on her nose!).

My favorite character is Abigail March, the girls' mother, whom they all call Marmee. She fills her time with charity work, but her main occupation is guiding her girls' morals, and shaping their characters. Marmee is kind, wise, graceful and dignified (she never loses her temper), but she is also warm, loving and gracious. But, what I really love about Marmee is how she gives her unconditional love and support to her girls. She is deeply spiritual, and teaches her girls how to survive in a particularly harsh time for their family.

I highly recommend this lovely, beautifully written book. When you read Little Women, whether it's for the first time, or if you are re-visiting it, pay particular attention to the character of Marmee. She is a mother to whom we can all aspire!

Controlling The Weather in Your Manuscript

Who says you can’t control the weather? You can in your manuscript, and what’s more, you can use it to enhance the mood, guide the plot, or boost the climax.

The weather plays a part in our daily lives: what we wear, how we plan events. The same can be said for your characters. They, too, can notice the temperature outside, what the sky looks like, how the air feels. Your characters’ observations ground them (and the reader!) in the setting, and add a layer of realism to your story.

The weather can also be symbolic of an underlying theme: Rain can symbolize sadness, despair, or new life; a blanket of snow may represent a feeling of stagnation, or hibernation; wind and storms often denote foreshadow a violent event; fog or mist are often the prelude to a revelation or another important event; moving clouds often represent change; thunder, the voice of God or gods, and so on.

For example, in “Dracula”, Bram Stoker chose London’s rainy, foggy climate to enhance his Gothic novel. Count Dracula can control the weather, creating mists to hide his presence. When he arrives in England, one of the worst storms ever recorded takes place, which, incidentally, he created for his grand entrance.

In “The Great Gatsby”, F. Scott Fitzgerald used the weather to chart his character’s moods—rain for tension, sun for laughter. Daisy ultimately has to choose between going away with Gatsby, or staying with Tom—on the hottest day of the year. The weather perfectly connects with the conflict.

On a more contemporary note, Stephenie Myer successfully created an eerie atmosphere when she chose Forks, Washington for the setting of “Twilight”. The rain (even of the freezing variety) is a backdrop in the story, providing a feeling of chilly foreboding. Bella moves from her comfort zone in sunny, hot Arizona to the constant cloud cover and rain of Forks, symbolizing her progression to a much more mysterious world.

In science fiction and fantasy, the sky is the limit (so to speak) when it comes to adding weather to your manuscript. When you are world building, the weather becomes a crucial element, and you are in control. Volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, wind, rainbows, and lightning are magically yours to command, and vividly express to your readers.

On a much grander scale, many writers use weather as an “event”. In “State of Fear”, Michael Critchton used global warming as the backdrop for the story, wherein the main villains are environmentalists. In Stephen King’s “Dolores Claiborne”, the tension of the story mounts as a total eclipse of the sun looms. Of course, this type of writing can be tricky; research is key.

In my YA Paranormal Romance, WIND, I use wind (naturally!) to signify the strength and awesome power of the angel, Dante, who arrives in Flynn Flood's life just when she needs him. The story takes place in the fall and winter, so, at first, the wind is a subtle foe, swirling leaves and bringing colder air. As the story progresses, the wind and snow is a catalyst for the evil which soon arrives in the form of the evil Lix Tetrax.

In WIND, Dante explains the meaning of the name Lix Tetrax:

“The name Lix is Greek, referring to the Earth, and Tetrax refers to the four seasons. Technically, he’s called the Demon of the Wind. He’s definitely full of hot air.”

Whatever the weather, don’t forget to add a splash of rain, a mysterious fog, or a perfect, sunny day. Used appropriately and imaginatively, weather will have a huge impact on your story.

We've probably all experienced writer's block at one time or another. You know the feeling - when you just can't drag yourself to open MS, and you have absolutely no plot/character ideas in your usually over-crowded mind.

I've been experiencing writer's block for a couple of months - actually since January, if truth be told - and it's scaring me to no end! A little voice in my vacant head keeps niggling me, "Will I ever get back to my current WIP?"

In December, 2010, I was happily working on SAND, the second book in my YA Paranormal Romance Saga, while querying agents for the first book, WIND. Then, of course, Christmas arrived, as it always does, and sucked up a great amount of my time and energy. I told myself it's normal not to be writing during the holidays, what with all the shopping, gift wrapping, cooking, parties, family time, etc.

As 2011 rolled around, I was struck down by a horrible flu (I was sure it was pnemonia, but the doctor insisted it wasn't, and he should know!), which I'm still battling to some extent as it slowly dwindles down. To add to this, I have a very demanding daytime gig (I'm an Admin. Assistant at a large Paramedic Service). Then, just as I was starting to feel better, my kids got sick too. They're both young adults, but still, I'm their mom, and my natural instinct is to take care of them, which of course, I did.

All this sounds like I'm whining a bit, and maybe I am, but the point is, I can't seem to get back on track with my writing.

So, lately I've been asking myself questions like, "Am I meant to be a writer?", "Should I carry on writing?", and "Will I ever find an agent?" Of course, deep down inside, I already know the answers to these questions (yes, yes, and yes!) In my heart of hearts, I know I'm just going through a funk, and I'll get back on track soon.

I miss writing. I miss the joy of creating a well-written, richly descriptive paragraph, or realistic, moving dialogue. But most of all, I miss my wonderful friends who come alive when I open my MS; WIND and SAND's cool protangonist, Flynn, her emotional little sister, Kevan, and their goofy, but loveable, brother, Dylan. I even miss the evil, Lix.

I miss connecting with my wonderful writer friends. I miss the comraderie; sharing the agonies and ecstacies of navigating the publishing world.

Then I began to wonder: Has this happened to you? Have you, for whatever reason(s), experienced writer's block? I'd love to hear your story!

Creating Your Main Character

The main character in your novel is arguably the most important part of your story. If the plot is the brains, the main character is the heart. Of course, a page-turning plot is essential, but, even with a gripping story, your readers will only be interested in what happens next if they care about your hero or heroine at the heart of the story. That is what creating your main character is all about: MAKING THE READER CARE. Create a main character that the reader has no strong feelings about, and the page turning will stop. Write a protagonist that readers know and love, and they won't be able to put your book down, and that’s your goal.

In Daphne Du Maurier’s gothic mystery, Rebecca, “The Girl,” the unnamed narrator, is one of the most beloved main characters in fiction. Why? Her feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, helplessness, awkwardness, and timidity are feelings everyone has experienced at some time. But it is also her ultimate bravery, unconditional love, and loyalty to her husband that makes her memorable. We care about her, because we can relate to her.

Readers don't necessarily have to like all of your characters, but they have to care about what happens to your main character. Some questions you may want to ask yourself are:

Have I created a clear visual image of my main character? Just remember, you don’t want a police report; delicately weave physical details into the story where they legitimately belong. Too many details are as fatal as too few.
Did I give my main character senses to help the reader see the world from his point of view? Does my main character smell, hear, feel, taste, and see the environment around him?
Does my main character have universal, human qualities? Does she laugh or cry? Does my main character experience frustration, disappointment, joy, anger, shame, guilt, ambivalence? Will readers be able to relate to these reactions?
Conversely, is my main character an individual? Does he have quirks, idiosyncrasies; funny, little habits that we all possess?
Is my heroine admirable, spirited? Does she have strong convictions, ethics and beliefs? Will she take a stand in conflict?
Does my main character behave logically, i.e., does he have common sense, worthy goals readers can relate to?
Is my protagonist a stereotype? Avoid clichés. Not all heroines have perfect hair, alabaster complexions, perky breasts, and happy dispositions. Not all heroes have perfect pecs, dazzling eyes, and yes, and Robert Pattinson’s hair!
Is my main character dynamic? Does she change in some way from who she was at the beginning of the novel? A main character should not be static, and watching her change is part of the fun!
Is my main character flawed? Remember, nobody’s perfect. A perfect main character is boring, not to mention unrealistic; in other words, a turn-off. Readers can quickly grow uninterested, not to mention resentful, toward a flawless main character.

In The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen is a complex main character. She is brave, loyal and likeable, but at the same time, displays a fierce competiveness, and can be cold, and calculating. Physically, Katniss is described as having straight black hair, olive skin and grey eyes, but Ms. Collins does this cleverly, by having Katniss, the narrator, describe her friend, Gale, with these characteristics, but adding that he could be her brother, thereby describing herself as well.

Writing a strong main character is challenging, but rewarding and fun! Keep him focused, dynamic, and realistic. If you care about your main character, others will too!

My Darling Daughter Graduates!

I'm so proud of my 17 year old daughter, Anne Marie. She is graduating from high school this year, and we just received her grad proofs!

Anma (as we've called her since she was a baby) is planning on becoming a Paramedic, and she has the perfect personality for such a career. She's brave, calm in a crisis, and uncommonly caring and kind - just the kind of Paramedic I would like to have caring for me if I should ever need one.

I am so incredibly happy for Anne Marie, in that she has zeroed in on a career that she's so jazzed about. All my love, admiration & congratulations go out to her!

Lisbeth Salander - As Cool As It Gets!

I just finished watching the final movie of the Millennium Triology, "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest." I watched the first and second movies, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," and, "The Girl Who Played With Fire," last week.

As for the "unputdownable" books, written by the late Stieg Larsson, I've read "The Girl With Dragon Tattoo," and I am half-way through "The Girl Who Play with Fire." I have to admit, I wish I had read all three books, then watched the videos, but I just couldn't wait. The books are great, but so are the movies - an unusual thing. As we all know, most books are usually superior to the movie version, but in this case, while the books are fantastic, so are the movies, and what made them so fantastic is the best protagonist I've seen in a long time - Lisbeth Salander.

Lisbeth, played so perfectly in the film by Swedish actress, Noomi Rapace, is a natural redhead, who dyes her hair black, she has multiple piercings, and dresses in black - black leather that is, and on her feet are black Converse sneakers or hip, black boots (just like 16-year-old Kevan Flood, one of the characters in my story, WIND). Lisbeth is physically strong, but tiny; she's the size of a child, and as thin as a whip, the books say. She rides a motorcycle, she boxes, wields a tazer, and is as agile as a cat.

Lisbeth is a 28-year-old computer hacker, employed by a security firm in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a survivor of horrific abuse as a child, and adult, and has a severe distrust of people, mainly men. She's an introvert; she's more of a listener, than a talker, which is probably why she is so intuitive. She has a eidetic(photographic) memory; she can recall memories, images and sounds with stunning clarity. She's the best there is at hacking into other people's computers and laptops, and uncovering covert information that would otherwise never have seen the light of day.

However, I think the trait I love most about Lisbeth is her comfort in her own skin. She's angry yes, but her anger is justified, and aimed in the right direction - punishing the bad guys, when conventional law enforcement is stymied. Lisbeth Salander knows who she is, and if you don't like her, that's just too bad.

Move over, Xena, Cat Woman, Batgirl, Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, Laura Croft, and even Buffy Summers - Lisbeth Salander is as cool as it gets!

The Great White North . . . Writes Great Books!

Canada has been nicknamed The Great White North for the substantial blanket of snow that covers the ground for half the year, but as an aspiring writer, I see its greatness in the talent of our past and present literary community:

Lucy Maud Montgomery

Born in 1874, Montgomery is best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The charming series was an immediate, international success featuring the beloved character, Anne Shirley, who goes to live with an elderly rural couple who are expecting a boy orphan, but are mistakenly sent a girl, yet decided to keep her.

Maza de la Roche

Mazo de la Roche (1879 – 1961) was born in Newmarket, Ontario (very close to where I presently live). Her third novel, Jalna, was submitted to the American magazine Atlantic Monthly in 1927, winning a $10,000 award, a small fortune in the 20’s! Its publication brought de la Roche fame and fortune at the age of 48 (yes, there’s still hope for me at 50!). The series tells the story of one hundred years of the Whiteoak family covering from 1854 to 1954. The novels were not written in sequential order, however, and each can be read as an independent story. The Jalna series has sold more than eleven million copies in 193 English and 92 foreign editions.

Margaret Laurence

Margaret Laurence (1926-1987) is one of Canada’s most loved and respected writers. She is the author of sixteen books, including a travel memoir, five novels and two collections of short stories, a translation of Somali tales and poems, a collection of essays and an important study of Nigerian dramatists. Laurence was born in 1926 and lived in Lakefield, Ontario (the northern town where Prince Andrew went to college). In perhaps her best-know work, The Stone Angel, Laurence tells the story of a 90-year old woman struggling to come to grips with a life of intransigence and loss. "Pride was my wilderness, the demon that led me there was fear." Although Stone Angel has been banned from some schools, it is studied at the grade 12 university level in other schools.
The Diviners, published in 1974 was Laurence’s final novel. Although on the surface, The Diviners depicts very different roles for women than her earlier novels do, there is a recurring theme of the female perspective on contemporary life. Margaret Laurence wrote fifteen books and a memoir that was published posthumously. She as also well-known for her work as a peace activist and as one of the founders of the Writers’ Union of Canada. Her encouragement of fellow writers is legendary.

Mordecai Richler

Mordecai Richler (1931 – 2001) was a Canadian author, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and essayist. He was born in Montreal, Quebec. Richler wrote movingly of his working class neighbourhood and its people, chronicling the hardships and disabilities they faced as a Jewish minority:

“To a middle-class stranger, it is true, one street would have seemed as squalid as the next. On each corner a cigar store, a grocery, and a fruit man. Outside staircases everywhere. Winding ones, wooden ones, rusty and risky ones. Here a prized lot of grass splendidly barbered, there a spitefully weedy patch. An endless repetition of precious peeling balconies and waste lots making the occasional gap here and there.”

His best known works are The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, and the Jacob Two-Two children's stories. A leading critic called him "the great shining star of his Canadian literary generation.”

Margaret Atwood

Ms. Atwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1939 and began writing at the age of six. She graduated from Harvard’s Radcliffe College in 1962 and went on to write The Edible Woman, The Handmaiden’s Tale, Cat’s Eye, The Robber Bride, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood. Atwood writes Dystopian Science Fiction, but prefers to label it “Speculative Fiction”, and "Adventure Romance" because it does not deal with “things that have not been invented yet” and goes beyond the realism she associates with the novel form.

Michael Ondaatje

Michael Ondaatje was born 1943 in Colombo, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and moved to England with his mother in 1954. After relocating to Canada in 1962, Ondaatje became a Canadian citizen. His style of fiction was introduced in Coming Through Slaughter and mastered in one of my favorite books, The English Patient. He creates a narrative by exploring many interconnected snapshots in minute detail.

Canada is known for many national treasures—Wayne Gretzky, Christopher Plummer, Ellen Page, Mike Myers, Niagara Falls, The Canadian Rocky Mountains, Hockey, Maple Syrup, Canadian Bacon, French Canadian Pea Soup, Butter Tarts, The Northern Lights, Canada Geese, Tim Horton’s (much-coveted coffee and donuts), Poutine (French Fries drizzled with melted cheese curds and gravy - my kids love it!), The Hudson Bay Company (which once owned 1/11th of the Earth's surface), Molson’s beer, great Health Care and Halloween costumes for kids that fit over snow suits—but, check out these great Canadian writers.

This is my beautiful American Cocker Spaniel, Symon Francis (Francis is for St. Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of Animals).

Symon came to me late in life (both our lives). I've only had him for three years - he'll be 11 years old in April, and I'll be . . . never mind.

Symon is featured in my YA Paranormal Romance, WIND; he's also the pet of my main character, Mary Flynn Flood. I'm pleased to share him with Flynn, just as long as she remembers, I knew him first!

Personal Encounters with Angels

Ever since I completed my Young Adult Paranormal Romance, WIND, I’ve been asked by many people, “Have you had encounters with angels?” This question always gets me thinking about what I believe are my personal encounters with those spiritual messengers.

As far back as I can remember, whenever I’ve been in a tight spot, a stranger would appear, seemingly out of the blue (so to speak), and assist me in my time of need. Then, just as quickly, they’d leave; vanish from my sight.

I recall the time when my car was stuck in my extensive, uphill driveway during a blizzard. My son—a baby at the time—was in his car seat in the back; my husband was not yet home from work. After several futile attempts at gunning my way up the drive, I realized the more I tried, the deeper the tires spun and dug into the overwhelming amount of packing snow already accumulated on the drive. I gave up. Yet, I was terrified the car would start to slide down the drive, and into the street. I took my small son out of the car, and we stood silently in the snow. I said a short prayer. Then, suddenly, a young man appeared out of the eddy of swirling snow. He walked toward me, and asked me if I needed any help. I hesitated, and then asked him if he could possibly get the car to the top of the drive. He smiled, jumped in the car without hesitation, and immediately drove it straight up the slippery slope to the top. He turned off the engine, leaped out of the car, and, still smiling, gently placed keys in my hand. Relieved, I began to thank him profusely, but he just kept walking, until he finally disappeared into the swirling flurry of white. How do I know he was an angel? There was something about him—a divine aura—that told me he wasn’t any ordinary good Samaritan.

Many years ago, I had locked my keys in my car (just like my main character, Mary-Flynn Flood does in WIND). After several futile attempts at trying to unhook the door lock with the end of a hanger, a man tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around, and he asked if he could give it a try. I immediately handed him the untwined hanger. He leaned into the cracked window, jiggled the extended wire hanger, and unlocked the door at once. I was stunned. I opened the car door, and then turned to thank him. Of course, he was gone.

I have experienced many more incidents such as these; too many to recount here. You may wonder, what did these heavenly helpers look like? Unlike many angel encounters I have read about, they weren’t especially tall, nor were they blond, with icy blue eyes. Both of these strangers looked like “regular” guys, dressed in an unexceptional fashion. They both appeared unexpectedly, quietly assisted, then disappeared, without warning.

It wasn’t long ago I realized I needed a REAL web presence. I was at my computer all day, silently stalking my favorite agent blogs hoping to glean the information I needed, but I wasn’t moving forward. I was writing manuscript after manuscript and getting nowhere. Was it the topic they rejected? Was the query too pathetic? Was it the writing??? Looking back, it was sad.

Then, I discovered Twitter.

Twitter, while intimidating at first tweet, is a brilliant hodgepodge of amazingness. I am now on a one woman quest to promote and encourage the use of twitter throughout the writing community! In case you don’t tweet, let me tell you why you should.

First, you chose who to follow. That means those people’s comments will appear on your screen when you log in. I started by following a favorite agent of mine, then I followed who she was following. That made sense right? If they interest her, then I need to know them too. I followed writers, publishers, agents, everyone in the industry I could find, and now I am enjoying it every day.

I log in to twitter to promote my blog, or talk about my writing hits and misses, and people respond! Using the #amwriting hashtag connects me with everyone else who’s writing and I’m not alone anymore. I frequently respond or comment on things agents or editors say and I’m making a little place for myself.

Twitter allows me to find writing contests, hot blog topics, and hear what agents and editor are saying about the industry. No more trolling the internet for hours. I have one stop shopping on twitter. I can network, get the scoop, and make friends who know the challenges I’m up against. I’ve found beta readers, guest bloggers and won my share of free books all thanks to the twitterverse.

I love the camaraderie. I can’t meet enough aspiring writers. We’re made up of the same stuff. I also love that agents will begin to recognize my name. I can’t imagine how tedious query reading can become, but I can imagine sifting restlessly through hundreds of emails and losing focus. Then, I picture myself preparing to pass on a query until I see a familiar name. I’m hoping that building a recognizable name will get my query one more read, through fresh eyes. After all, it only takes one yes, right?

So, if you’re still reading this, I hope it means you already have a twitter account. If not, please stop over, check it out and consider joining twitter. I’ve met my closest of writer friends that way (and two of them don’t even live on this continent). I joined a critique group and I have a sounding board. Twitter is a fabulous tool for every aspiring writer and every author looking to build a platform of readers.

Are You "A Scarlett" or "A Melanie?"

I'm re-reading one of my all-time favorite books, Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell's writing is so enchanting, and the historical details of plantation life, and the Civil War are rich and fascinating. But, what always amazes me is the life-long dynamics between Katie Scarlett O'Hara Hamilton Kennedy Butler and Melanie Hamilton Wilkes. These two Southern belles are polar opposites, yet in spite of these differences, or maybe because of them, eventually they become more than sisters-in-law; they become best friends (even if Scarlett doesn't realize it until it's too late!).

Miss Scarlett is spoiled, scheming, unabashedly self-centered, willful, vain, and obstinate. However, she's also vivacious, intelligent, shrewd, strong-willed, brave, and most importantly, a survivor; the original "Steel Magnolia."

Melanie is the antithesis of Scarlett in many ways - she's quiet, shy, sweet, modest, patient, unassuming, thoughtful, well-read, beyond kind, and forgiving.

When I was younger, I was definately more of "A Scarlett;" determined to get my own way at any cost, and God help anyone who got in my way (hey, I'm a redhead!). Now, as I'm getting older, I'm becoming more of a "Melanie"; a little kinder, and gentler (I think they call it "mellowing").

So, all these thoughts have inspired me to beg the question:

What's Your Writing Background Noise?

I was just surfing through the TV channels, and had to laugh; I saw "The Cottage Channel". You see, I wrote my novel, WIND, with this program quietly splashing in the background.

The Cottage Channel is the cousin of other weird programs like, "The Fireplace Channel," "The Aquarium Channel," and "The Sunset Channel." These simulations are, without question, bizzare, but somehow comforting when you can't get near the real thing. I love water, and grew up with a cottage on a lake, and found the sound of water lapping, and the haunting calls of loons conducive to long stretches of creative writing. The funny part is that every so often, one of my kids would stroll into the room and ask, "Do I hear loons? What are you watching, Mom?"

I'm "channeling" my fake cottage again, while writing my second book, SAND (which does take place at a cottage!).

Chanukah, or The Festival of Lights, is about to begin tomorrow night. The eight day holiday commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after it was destroyed by the Maccabean revolt in the 2nd century. Chanukah is observed by lighting the candles on a Menorah - one candle each day, over an eight day period (the smallest candle is used to light the other eight).

I've always thought Menorahs were enchantingly beautiful, and went on a search for my favourites. I would like to share them you:

Be My Baby by Ronnie Spector with Vince Waldron

Last night I finished "Be My Baby: How I survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness, or My Life as a Fabulous Ronette" by Ronnie Spector, with Vince Waldron. I spotted it at a small bookstore last week, and being a huge fan of the Ronettes, I grabbed it immediately. I have always loved Ronnie's one-of-a-kind voice, and was curious about her life, and, I have to admit, Phil Spector's, too.

Veronica (Ronnie) Bennett was born in Spanish Harlem on August 10, 1943. Ronnie loved singing as a child, and soon formed an all-girl group, The Ronettes, with her sister, Estelle, and cousin, Nedra Talley. The Ronettes were quickly scooped up by legendary music producer, Phil Spector, who was famous for creating the distinctive, "Wall of Sound," a layering technique, producing a rich and complex sound. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

The gorgeous Ronnie and boy genius, Phil, fell madly in love, and eventually married. The couple moved into a California mansion and adopted two young boys. Unfortunately, the fairy tale had a twisted ending (as so many fairytales do!), with Ronnie fleeing the confines of their mansion in her bare feet, with no money or possessions, never to return.

However, being the survivor that she is, Ronnie ultimately triumphed over many of the familiar hazards of a rock and roll life. She got by with a little help from her friends, including John Lennon, George Harrison, Cher, Billy Joel, Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Money, and Joey Ramone, but to name a few. (Cher wrote the book's forward, and the introduction is written by Bill Joel.)

Ms. Spector calls herself, "Rock and Roll's Bad Girl," but she's actually a "good girl"; a loving wife and mother, devoted daughter, and supportive sister. She's loyal to a fault, innocently sweet, and refreshingly candid about her missteps, many of them life-altering. (The updated edition includes new material, revealing Ronnie's take on Phil Spector's bizzare arrest and ultimate conviction of second degree murder.)

Sun, I Bid You Adieu!

As we set our clocks back to Standard Time this weekend, I can't help but wonder if it's a good thing.

Yes, we get to finally reclaim that extra hour of blessed sleep of which we were robbed in the spring, but to "Fall Back" also signifies that the dark days of winter are peeking around the corner. I don't know about you, but I think there's something almost eerie about driving to work in a jet black sky, and then driving home in the inky night. I can go a whole day without even seeing the sun - very surreal.

On the other hand, an extra hour in the day is a gift; the gift of more time to sleep; the gift of more time to read; the gift of more time to spend with my beloved Cocker Spaniel, Symon, and, of course, the gift of more time to write.

And so, for better or worse, until the second Sunday in March, 2011, when Daylight Savings returns; sun, I bid you adieu!

Halloween

Well, the hype is well underway - it's Halloween again!

I drove by a popular costume store and the parking lot was jammed. I hate to say it, but I'm a little relieved that I don't have to go through that anymore. My kids are 17 & 21; well past the trick or treating age.

Having said that, I'll still give out treats at the door. I love seeing the little angels, ghosts, witches, and Harry Potters. I don't even mind the older ones; you know, the teenagers who should have given it up years ago, but just want the free candy bars.

I can't believe it! I woke up this morning, looked out the window, and saw the trees, roads, sidewalks, and cars covered with a thick coating of snow!

And, it's not even Halloween!

Then, after much inner denial, I resigned myself to the fact that winter is actually coming (ug). And then, something weird happened - slowly, I began to realize that it's actually pretty; almost beautiful.

It's something I struggle with every fall. I know winter is coming, and I try to embrace it, in all it's shining, white glory (I live in ski country, just north of Toronto), but I can't help it, I love the fall & spring; summer & winter, not so much. Summer is just too hot & humid here, and winter, well, it's just too cold. My favorite season is fall - with its colorful, falling leaves, crisp mornings, and sunny, warm afternoons - it's just right (I know, sounds like Goldilocks, right?).

So, I start getting ready for work, I begin to resign myself - I can't actually do anything about it, short of getting a green card, and moving to Florida (I wish!), so I'll try to embrace it . . . let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Ontario Public Library Week

Ontario Library Week 2010 is October 17th - 23th.

An annual fall event, Ontario Public Library Week was first announced by the province in 1985, and has since become the focus for promoting public library services in Ontario, Canada.

A strong library system is the cornerstone of a strong community. Ontario Public Library Week recognizes the important contribution Ontario's public libraries make to education, literacy and life-long learning in Ontario communities.

With more than 1,100 service points throughout Ontario, public libraries’ patrons make over 66 million visits to local libraries across Ontario annually. And now, virtually every library branch in the province also provides access to electronic information through the Internet.

Public libraries, dedicated librarians, and devoted volunteers across the province are planning special activities to mark Ontario Public Library Week, and many public libraries are also celebrating Canadian Library Month.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving. I've often wondered why Canadian and American Thanksgivings are at different times.

Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th Century, when it was typically held on November 6th. After the end of World War I, Thanksgiving Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held during the same week. To avoid the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957, Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date.

Thanksgiving in the United States had typically been observed on different dates throughout history; by the beginning of the 20th Century, the final Thursday in November had become the standard day of Thanksgiving in most U.S. States. It would not be until December 26th, 1941, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after pushing to move the date earlier to give the county an economic boost, signed a bill into law making Thanksgiving a national holiday fixed to its current date.

Today, Thanksgiving is held on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States of America, and the second Monday of October in Canada.

Every year, around the dining room table, as my family proceeds to eat a bountiful feast (usually turkey with stuffing and gravy; fresh, regional vegetables; and a decadent dessert!) Everyone recounts what they're thankful for. What will I say this year? What am I thankful for? Well, of course, I'm thankful that I'm still here; alive and well, surrounded by my loved ones - my children, my pets. I'm also thankful for being independent; for being able afford all that wonderful food (so many people can't). But, I'm thankful for the gift of writing - I love it so much, and have made many new friends through sharing this gift.

As the last long weekened of the summer commences, I hate to admit, I'm thrilled Fall is here. The summer of 2010 was just too hot for me.

I love the crisp, cool days of Autumn. I love the stunning colours, the smokey smell of burning leaves, the feeling of cool rain. I love the food; stews, soups, chili! I also love the clothes of Fall: jeans, leather boots, bulky sweaters.

The Shy Man Cometh - My Encounter with Joey Ramone

When I was seventeen, I had an encounter I would recall with fondness many years later. It was the night I met Joey Ramone. Actually, it wasn’t just Joey; Dee Dee, Johnny and Tommy were there too, but it’s Joey I remember.

It was 1977 - Jimmy Carter was President; serial killer, “Son of Sam”, was terrorizing New York, and Elvis Presley would die that August. But for me, it was a summer of a music, cool clothes and fun. Disco reigned supreme, but suddenly, out of the excess of thumping, and reverberated vocals, came a new music—Punk Rock.

Punk was fast, hard-edged, stripped-down, with an anti-establishment message; a welcome diversion for bored teenagers—bored with the current mind-numbing sound of The Bee Gees, et al. And then there was the clothes. We wore tight, straight-legged jeans (when everyone was still wearing bell-bottoms), ripped T-shirts, stiletto heels, black eyeshadow, red lipstick, and, of course, the garment de rigueur; a black leather jacket.

The only Punk club in Toronto was the “Crash ‘n’ Burn”, buried in the bottom of a downtown warehouse. It was frequented by kids dying to hear the new sound from local bands like Teenage Head, The Diodes, The Viletones. But bands playing larger venues would stop in after their gigs; bands usually from the Mecca of North American Punk—New York City. I recall meeting Deborah Harry from Blondie, a heavily pregnant Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads, and others. But the night I remember with the most clarity is when The Ramones stopped in for a drink.

Joey wasn’t hard to spot. He towered over everyone like a gentle giant (he was 6’ 8”). He was dressed in the official Ramones “uniform”: straight-legged blue jeans, T-shirt, white Converse sneakers, black leather jacket. He looked lost in the throng, like a child who suddenly finds himself separated from his mother in a crowd. I approached him. He was sweet, polite, and shy to the extreme. Wearing his trademark rose-colored shades, he said he was enjoying Toronto, and was amazed at its cleanliness, especially in comparison to the Bowery, the Manhattan neighborhood in which he lived. Joey revealed his favorite band was a group I hadn’t heard of—The Cramps.

We talked until one of my friends whispered in my ear, “You don’t have to stand with him all night!” I reluctantly said goodbye. He leaned down from his rarefied atmosphere, virtually bent over double, hugged me, and said goodbye. I made my way to an ice-filled bathtub, my hand going numb as I fished around for a beer. Glancing back, I saw that he was still alone, watching the mayhem surrounding him, like an alien from another planet, sent to observe our way of life.

I was truly saddened when I heard about Joey’s death in 2001. Thirty years later (it just can’t be that long!), I was surprised to hear my sixteen-year-old daughter listening to The Ramones. I told her about my teenage encounter with Joey. She was amazed, delighted. It was the first time I recounted it to anyone. This is the second.

The Second Book

As I 'm deep into the second book in my YA Paranormal Romance Saga, SAND, I can’t help but ponder the advantages and disadvantages of writing “the second book”.

There is a certain straightforwardness to continuing the saga: For one thing, main characters are established; their physical descriptions, personalities, quirks, speech patterns, humour, values, relationships. Hopefully, readers will already care enough about your main characters to be excited to see them resurrected, so to speak, to stick with them through the long haul.

Then there’s the settings; initial settings have been established and described in the first book, but this will likely expand, and transform. New sights, sounds and smells will have to be imagined and described.

Theme is usually carried on – theme is soul; it permeates the entire saga; it’s your very reason for writing (at the risk of sounding dramatic!).

The challenges arise when faced with “topping” the first MS.

New and improved plot, characters’ newborn hopes and dreams, imaginative rising action and climax. Just like real life, things never stay the same.

The real challenge is the conflict. Conflict will have to be original, and exciting enough to make a continuing story worth reading, of course. Without fresh conflict, there is no fresh story; without fresh story, there is no second book.

It’s a huge commitment, a second book, but it’s an exciting challenge, and a chance to bring your beloved characters back to life!

I'm thrilled to be featured on the latest installment of the QueryTracker Blog.

It's just a short musing about querying too early, which, I admit, I did last Fall. I started my MS, Wind, in April, 2009. I typed the words, "The End", in August, and was so elated that I proceeded to query several choice agents (at least I did some homework-they were interested in seeing work in the YA Paranormal Romance genre). My big mistake was that my MS wasn't polished. It needed more work-a fair amount of work-I'm embarrassed to say.

Naturally, I experienced some rejection (I was asked for partials, which was encouraging, but not one full). And so, it was back to the drawing board and, truth be told, I'm so glad. My MS is now strong, well-written, and much more polished. The only downside is that I can't go back and query those initial agents, but, that's okay; there are other fabulous agents out there, and they can be found all in one place-QueryTracker.

Going to My Sister's Cottage Again!

I've been invited to my sister's cottage again! Symon (my adorable Cocker Spaniel) and I are leaving today and returning Sunday. I so love it up there - the lake (Georgian Bay); the food (my sister, Marianne, is a gourmet cook, and always serves some wonderful new dish that usually involves asparagus or watermelon, or goat's cheese); the cottage itself (I'm usually assigned to the awesome guest cabin with heated floors!); and of course, the wonderful company.

Southern Gothic - Always A "Hot" Genre

All this hot weather makes my mind meander to books set in the South with extreme heat, long cool drinks, men in white suits wiping their brows with large linen handkerchiefs, delicate southern laidies swooning. I’m not talking Gone With The Wind; I was thinking more along the lines of Tennessee Williams – Southern Gothic.

Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. He immortalized The South in such works as The Glass Menagerie, A Street Car Named Desire, and my personal favourites, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and, Suddenly Last Summer.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is set on a large cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta in the summer – and it’s hot. The patriarch and tycoon, Big Daddy, so brilliantly portrayed by the late Burl Ives in the 1955 Broadway production, as well as the 1958 big-screen version, is huffing and puffing in the heat and at one point, Maggie, played by the great Elizabeth Taylor, holds her glass up to her brow to cool down. Ceiling fans slowly twirl over white wicker furniture, and shuttered windows are flung wide open, in anticipation of catching the smallest breeze. During the climax, the heavens open and torrential rains descend upon the plantation.

In Suddenly Last Summer, Catherine (again played by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1959 film version) has a breakdown after witnessing her cousin’s death in Spain. We see Sebastian in an immaculate white suit and Panama hat, running from the pack of boys who will soon devour him (quite literally), Catherine with a deep brown tan, in a swim suit under the white hot skies and bleached white sand.

The Southern Gothic genre often uses weather to guide the plot. Other Southern Gothic writers I admire are: Truman Capote, Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, and, of course, William Faulkner.

July 1st is Canada Day and it's a stat holiday. I'll be at home, in all likelyhood, cooking, eating, reading, writing and watching movies.

Unfortunately, Canada Day is a day that my cocker spaniel, Symon, always suffers a mini-breakdown - he's terrified of the fireworks that usually start at dusk - the city puts on a beautiful fireworks display on the water, but my townhouse backs onto a park, so the occasional pop of cherry bombs can be can be heard sporadically until the wee hours, sending poor Syms into a tizzy.

Much like the 4th of July for Americans, July 1st is a day of smells & sounds: BBQ smoke curling through the neighborhood with the promise of burgers, steaks or hotdogs; lawnmowers humming, teenagers laughing, tots squealing, the splashing of pool water, and the low hum of suped-up cars cruising down the street.

Of course, Symon is oblivious to all these goings on, except for one - the pop, pop, pop of firecrackers.

Thank God it's just one day every summer (until Labour Day!).

Today is the first day of my annual "Sister's Weekend".

I was up at the crack of dawn, packing my bag (and my dog, Symon's), getting ready to head 45 minutes north to join my sisters, Marianne and Claudia, for a relaxing weekend. We'll be eating, sleeping, swimming, sunning, video watching (I'm bringing Sex and The City, and Avatar), magazine reading (I've got Vanity Fair and Writer's Digest). I can't wait to leave the city behind!

P.S. - There's no real fishing involved!

Patience

Waiting - I've never been very good at it. Today I'm waiting to hear about possibly getting a new home and I have to admit, I have a fluttering, nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach.

When I was a kid (about 100 years ago!), I was very impatient. But, as I've become older and more mature (okay, maybe not more mature), I've tried to work on my relationship with patience - tried to communicate with it, understand it, meet it half way, even romance it. I think it's paid off, because we've called a truce, patience and I. We're much better friends than we used to be.

I'm Not 50 - I'm 49.95, Plus Tax!

I'm not too sure how I feel about turning 50 this weekend. I was never one of those people who had a hard time with 20, 30 or 40 years of age. You know, the kind of person who says, "I was totally depressed when I left my 20's." I never had this problem; I was always very comfortable in my own skin, at all ages. This birthday, however, is different. I wouldn't say I'm depressed; that's not it. It just feels weird - in 20 years I'll be 70 - how weird is that?

One of the great things about where I'm at now is my writing career (such as it is - LOL!). Seriously, I think realizing your own mortality frees you a little; frees you to ensure you do what you love - NOW. In a sense, I've never felt more comfortable in my almost-half-a-century skin.

I'm 50 (almost) and writing YA - sounds strange, but my wonderful son, Matthew, is 20 and his lovely girlfriend, Trisha, is 29, and my brilliant daughter, Anne Marie, is 16, so I'm surrounded by YA, in a sense. I hear what they like and don't like in books, movies, etc. The four of us discuss everything YA ad nauseum (we have dissected The Twilight Saga to death!), so I still feel very young.

One of my favorite authors summed it up beautifully . . .

Contests - How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count The Ways . . .

Today I entered the Query Tracker Agent Judged Contest and I must say, I really had a blast!

The contest opened at 12:00 p.m. and I was ready at my computer, at work (technically, I was on lunch, in case my boss is reading this!), refreshing, refreshing; waiting for the registration form to appear. Like an apparition, it did appear and, with trembling hands, I filled it out and pasted my log line and first paragraph into the form, then I pushed the button and, like a magic, the form disappeared into the IT netherworld.

I must take this opportunity to apologize to one of my co-workers, Jen. At one minute to 12:00, Jen approached my desk and proceeded to ask me for something (I really don't remember what she asked for). I replied, "Jen, could you come back in five minutes, please?" She glanced at my screen, smiled knowingly and said, "Oh, sure, no problem." What a good sport she is!

Anyway, it was fun while it lasted and I am looking forward to doing it again.

Michael Scott - Beloved Irish Writer

With St. Patrick's Day fast approaching, I thought I'd write about wonderful Irish writer, Michael Scott.

Michael Scott has been writing for over 25 years (his first book was published in 1983), and is one of Ireland's most successful and prolific authors, with over 100 titles to his credit, spanning a variety of genres, including Fantasy, Science Fiction, Folklore.

Michael is considered an authority on folklore of Celtic lands. His collections, entitled, Irish Folk & Fairy Tales, Irish Myths & Legends, and Irish Ghosts & Hauntings, are considered the definitive work on the subject. The Irish Times recently proclaimed Michael, "The King of Fantasy in these Isles."

His horror novels, Banshee, Image, Reflection, Imp and Hallows are considered classics of the genre. Michael's fantasy trilogies, Silverhand and Silverlight were published in the U.S. to excellent reviews.

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, is a series of six YA Fantasy novels that chronicle the adventures of 15 year old twins, Sophie and Josh Newman, who stumble into a world of magic that criss-crosses the globe. Many of the characters are from history and mythology, indeed, Nicholas Flamel, a French alchemist, was a real person born in 1313. The film rights to the series have been sold, and the first book, The Alchemist, is in production, set to be released in 2011.

The six books are: The Alchemist, The Magician, The Sorceress, The Necromancer, The Warlock and The Enchantress.

The Great White North

It’s called the GREAT White North for Many Reasons . . .

Canada has been nicknamed The Great White North for the substantial blanket of snow that covers the ground for half the year, but as an aspiring writer, I see its greatness in the talent of our past and present literary community:

Lucy Maud Montgomery
Born in 1874, Montgomery is best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The charming series was an immediate, international success featuring the beloved character, Anne Shirley, who goes to live with an elderly rural couple who are expecting a boy orphan, but are mistakenly sent a girl, yet decided to keep her.

Maza de la Roche
Mazo de la Roche (1879 – 1961) was born in Newmarket, Ontario (very close to where I presently live). Her third novel, Jalna, was submitted to the American magazine Atlantic Monthly in 1927, winning a $10,000 award, a small fortune in the 20’s! Its publication brought de la Roche fame and fortune at the age of 48 (yes, there’s still hope for me at 49!). The series tells the story of one hundred years of the Whiteoak family covering from 1854 to 1954. The novels were not written in sequential order, however, and each can be read as an independent story. The Jalna series has sold more than eleven million copies in 193 English and 92 foreign editions.

Margaret Laurence
Margaret Laurence (1926-1987) is one of Canada’s most loved and respected writers. She is the author of sixteen books, including a travel memoir, five novels and two collections of short stories, a translation of Somali tales and poems, a collection of essays and an important study of Nigerian dramatists. Laurence was born in 1926 and lived in Lakefield, Ontario (the northern town where Prince Andrew went to college). In perhaps her best-know work, The Stone Angel, Laurence tells the story of a 90-year old woman struggling to come to grips with a life of intransigence and loss. "Pride was my wilderness, the demon that led me there was fear." Although Stone Angel has been banned from some schools, it is studied at the grade 12 university level in other schools.

The Diviners, published in 1974 was Laurence’s final novel. Although on the surface, The Diviners depicts very different roles for women than her earlier novels do, there is a recurring theme of the female perspective on contemporary life. Margaret Laurence wrote fifteen books and a memoir that was published posthumously. She as also well-known for her work as a peace activist and as one of the founders of the Writers’ Union of Canada. Her encouragement of fellow writers is legendary.

Mordecai Richler
Mordecai Richler (1931 – 2001) was a Canadian author, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and essayist. He was born in Montreal, Quebec. Richler wrote movingly of his working class neighbourhood and its people, chronicling the hardships and disabilities they faced as a Jewish minority:
“To a middle-class stranger, it is true, one street would have seemed as squalid as the next. On each corner a cigar store, a grocery, and a fruit man. Outside staircases everywhere. Winding ones, wooden ones, rusty and risky ones. Here a prized lot of grass splendidly barbered, there a spitefully weedy patch. An endless repetition of precious peeling balconies and waste lots making the occasional gap here and there.”
His best known works are The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, and the Jacob Two-Two children's stories. A leading critic called him "the great shining star of his Canadian literary generation.”

Margaret Atwood
Ms. Atwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1939 and began writing at the age of six. She graduated from Harvard’s Radcliffe College in 1962 and went on to write The Edible Woman, The Handmaiden’s Tale, Cat’s Eye, The Robber Bride, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood. Atwood writes Dystopian Science Fiction, but prefers to label it “Speculative Fiction”, and "Adventure Romance" because it does not deal with “things that have not been invented yet” and goes beyond the realism she associates with the novel form.

Michael Ondaatje
Michael Ondaatje was born 1943 in Colombo, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and moved to England with his mother in 1954. After relocating to Canada in 1962, Ondaatje became a Canadian citizen. His style of fiction was introduced in Coming Through Slaughter and mastered in The English Patient. He creates a narrative by exploring many interconnected snapshots in minute detail.

Canada is known for many national treasures—Wayne Gretzky, Christopher Plummer, Ellen Page, Mike Myers, Niagara Falls, The Canadian Rocky Mountains, Hockey, Maple Syrup, Canadian Bacon, French Canadian Pea Soup, Butter Tarts, The Northern Lights, Canada Geese, Tim Horton’s (much-coveted coffee and donuts), Poutine (French Fries drizzled with melted cheese curds and gravy-my kids love it!), The Hudson Bay Company (which once owned 1/11th of the Earth's surface), Molson’s beer, great Health Care and Halloween costumes for kids that fit over snow suits—but, check out these great Canadian writers.

I know they won’t disappoint.

This Day in Literary History . . .

On January 24, 1862, Edith Wharton was born to an old and wealthy New York family. She grew up in an opulent world where pre-Civil War society tried to keep the nouveau riche at bay. Wharton, expected to become a typical wife, mother, and hostess, instead showed intellectual talent and began to write at an early age. At age 23, she married prominent socialite Edward Wharton, who had neither a profession nor fortune - they divorced in 1913. Edith returned to writing, often dealing with themes of divorce, unhappy marriages, and free-spirits trapped by societal pressures - in other words, she wrote what she knew.

Wharton's 1905 novel, The House of Mirth, told the story of a New York socialite with a strong sense of individuality who cannot adapt to the roles to which were expected of her. The book became a bestseller. Her novella, Ethan Frome, detailing a New England farmer trapped by the demands of the women in his life, is one of her best-known works. Her 1920 novel, Age of Innocence, won the Pulitzer.

Edith remained in France during World War I, assisting refugees, and was made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 1916.

In 1927, she published another bestseller, Twilight Sleep, then her autobiography, A Backward Glance, in 1934. She died in France in 1937.

Patches - A Sweet Curmudgeon

Patches is the hyper-active feline featured in WIND. He was given to me by a coworker about five years ago. I adopted him thinking he would be a good replacement for Samantha, who had just passed away (the cat I inherited from my father). You see, my son, Matthew, had grown very attached to Samantha, and was heart broken when she died. As it turned out, Patches took to me in a big way and inched his way into my heart. (Another cat, Sparkles, became Matthew's good friend). Patches is a sweet curmudgeon. He cries on the counter when he's hungry and his cry sounds like a baby bird begging for a worm. This prompted one young visitor to the house to ask, "Do you have a bird in here somewhere?" He's extremely bossy and chases the other cats every chance he gets, but like most bullies, he's a coward at heart - he runs for his life and hides in a kitchen cupboard when Lucky, the Dachshund, chases him (Lucky is referenced to in WIND and will make an appearance in SAND.) Nonetheless, he's a dear and we all love him.
